So what are the best workout routines for burning fat and losing weight?

No doubt a question that those looking to lose weight and tone their bodies have agonized over.  In an attempt to find the best workout programs people have drawn many different conclusions...
  • Some say that running alone is the best because runners are thin.
  • Others contend that weight lifting is the answer because bodybuilders have very low body fat.
  • For others it's swimming, biking, dancing or other forms of cardio exercises.
There are so many conflicting opinions about the best routines it's easy to see why people get confused.

But the one fundamental thing that you must understand is that the best fat burning workouts tend to have variety.

It's important to note that there are world class runners, fitness models, dancers, swimmers, bodybuilders, and athletes of all kind... all of which tend to have very little body fat.

A little secret: The runners don't just run and the models don't just lift weights. They do both!

The best workout routines combine both muscle building forms of exercise and cardio forms of exercise. Programs that combine each of these elements tend to be more sustainable, providing for better weight loss results.

Many people have promoted cardio alone for weight loss. They support this by indicating the large amount of calories burned by cardio exercises. I agree that these exercises are great for burning calories, but cariovascular alone does very little for building lean muscle. (Women, like men, also need muscle developement if they hope to achieve maximum fat loss.)

"Why do I need to gain muscle mass?"

Because muscle burns more calories than fat. If you are overweight chances are you have low muscle mass. Without the muscle you will have a very difficult time experiencing the results you desire.  This is what makes muscle building workouts, such as weight lifting, so important.
