Iodine Weight Loss Explained


Many people make the mistake of viewing iodine in the same light as taking vitamins..."More must be better...Right?"

Unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case with iodine.

If you're thinking about increasing your iodine intake to try to lose weight there are some things you need to know...The only time that you should be taking iodine weight loss supplements is if you are iodine deficient.

Iodine is a trace mineral that is required by the body for an efficiently functioning thyroid gland.  The thyroid is incredibly important because it is responsible for producing hormones that regulate body metabolism.  In short, lack of iodine in your system can lead to an inefficient metabolism, thus causing weight gain. An iodine deficiency can also have a negative impact on your health.

If you are deficient in iodine weight loss is possible simply be increasing your iodine intake.  Consuming more iodine will help your metabolism run more efficiently.

However, if you're not deficient and you consume too much iodine on a regular basis it may negatively impact your health.  Similar to and iodine deficiency, too much iodine can also negatively impact the thyroid gland.

So how do you know if you're getting enough?

Foods such as seafood, kelp, certain vegetables and iodized table salt contain iodine.  However, even if you eat these foods it is still possible to be iodine deficient.  The best way to know for sure is to consult your doctor.
