What is Your Healthy Pregnancy Weight?

We have all heard the staggering statistics indicating that nearly two out of every three people in this country are overweight...

But obesity among pregnant women seems to be a forgotten sector.

Many soon to be mothers are confused about just what a healthy pregnancy weight is...evidenced by the reality that more than half of pregnant women between 20 and 39 are overweight or obese!

No doubt, this obesity is do in part to the fact that many pregnant women are given the advice to simply "eat like you're eating for two" or "to eat as much as you want and almost anything you want..."

Unfortunately, this advice is creating an ever increasing rate of obesity among pregnant women...including both women who were at a healthy weight before they became pregnant and those who were overweight.

As a pregnant woman what you eat and how much you eat both matter.  I mean, you would never dream of telling someone who is not pregnant to "eat anything and as much as they want"...  Why? Because it's certain to lead to obesity.  Yet why is it that we give pregnant women this advice...?

Obesity during pregnancy is linked to....
  • Premature birth
  • Cesarean Sections
  • Preeclampsia
  • Many Birth defects
as well as many other complications for the woman and her baby.

As a pregnant woman you need to understand that there is a difference between gaining weight during pregnancy and becoming fat during pregnancy.

A healthy pregnant woman will naturally gain weight, but she will also be lean and trim, not displaying the common "flab" that is evident among many pregnant women these days.

It's true that women gain weight differently while pregnant and each woman has her own unique pregnancy weight, which will certainly be greater for some.  However, there is no reason to be overweight.

So how can you ensure your healthy pregnancy weight?

By eating an optimal healthy diet (most people, including doctors, do not understand this) practicing good eating habits and being active.

It's really that simple.  These are the steps to a healthy weight regardless of whether you are pregnant or not.
