Healthy
Food for ChildrenWhat
is
considered healthy food for
children?
Perhaps you have been led to believe that somehow
children have
different nutrition requirements than adults. It can be misleading with
all of the various studies and news reports that claim children need
more of this or less of that; often backed up by the fact that they are
growing.
Many of us have also been taught that in our
younger years we can eat
most anything we like, without consequences. Phrases like
"he's a growing boy" and "enjoy it while you can" have led to the
belief that children somehow don't reap the negatives of bad
food choices. However, unless you walk around with your eyes closed,
you would quickly see that this isn't the case...
So
just what is healthy food for children?
I assure you that when it comes
to diet, it truly is a case of one size fits all. The best
diet is one that consists of primarily plant based
unprocessed food.
As parents, healthy food choices
for kids begin at snack
time. Snacks should not be eliminated, they should simply be
healthy.
Teaching your children healthy food choices at snack time will go a
long way in their food choices right into adulthood.
Food choices are not just important as snack time
however. If
you have
an overweight child you can rest assured that it is do in no small part
to what your child is eating at school. School lunches
are among the unhealthiest around. As a parent it is a good idea to
send a homemade lunch with your children and to make
sure that you are setting a good example at breakfast and dinner time.
Healthy food choices also include what your
children drink.
In a
culture where soft drinks and sugar loaded fruit juices are the #1
drink of preference among children, it may seem like an impossibility
to implement healthy alternatives. Don't fall for the myth
that children are somehow more prone to crave these drinks than adults.
Children are simply so used to drinking sugary drinks
and eating sugary food that they have developed cravings. Eliminate
these drinks and the sugar cravings will vanish.
Implementing
healthy food for children is not a difficult task. As a
parent, if you implement healthy food choices into your own life you
will find that they will rub off on your children.
