Calories
Needed per Day So
what is the total
number of calories needed per day?
The best answer to the question is
it all
depends...There are
cultures
throughout the world that eat around 2000
calories
per day and are among
the leanest, healthiest people on the face of the earth.
Amazingly enough, the average American diet has right around the same
amount of calories, inevitably raising the question...
Why
are we fat?
Allow me to elaborate on the "it all depends
answer" from
above. The
full answer is that it all depends on what you
are eating. One person eats 2000 calories per day consisting
primarily of
unrefined
plant-based food and another eats 2000 calories consisting of primarily
animal fats and refined food. Everything else remaining the same, who
gains weight?
On top of the weight gain, the person that eats the
refined
food is
going to find that they are hungry
almost all of the time.
Why? Because the question of total
number of calories needed per day is a trick question...
If you are eating the wrong food you will never get
enough of
the right
calories and you will always be hungry. Your body
needs the right calories. You can eat an unlimited amount of calories
per day of the wrong food and still be hungry because
your body doesn't function on calories...It functions on the right
calories! Of course there are exceptions to the
calories per
day question. If you are highly active then you will tend to need more
calories per day than someone who is not. The same holds true for
physically larger individuals. By physically larger I do not
mean fat, I mean "bigger". The bigger you are the more
calories you will require.
So how do you know when you are getting the right
amount of
calories?
We have made this far too complicated!
The simple answer is that you will know when you
have had
enough
because you won't be hungry. It almost seems too easy doesn't it? The
truth is that your body tells
you when you are not getting enough food, it is called the "hungry
feeling".
If you are eating the right food
you do not need to wonder if you are
getting the correct amount of calories needed per day, your body will
tell you when you have had enough.
