Calories in a Pound

There are approximately 3500 calories in a pound of fat. It seems logical to think that if you simply burn 3500 calories you will lose a pound of body fat.

In fact, many people try to lose weight with this notion in mind only to be left frustrated. You can avoid this frustration by understanding how your body burns calories.

The body burns calories from carbohydrates and fats. Fat is not the optimal source of energy because it can only be burned in the presence of an adequate supply of oxygen.

Several different factors determine oxygen supply to the body and therefore the percentage of fat to carbohydrates that your body burns...Diet, stress, energy stores, fitness level and genetics are among the list of factors.

Fitness level is perhaps the greatest factor in determining how your body burns fat.  The vast majority of people trying to lose weight have a low fitness level. As a result, their bodies do not receive a sufficient amount of oxygen to burn large quantities of fat. Compared to someone who is physically fit, a person who is not fit will burn a much smaller percentage of fat in all activities including rest.

When it comes to losing fat, the lower your fitness level, the harder time you will have losing weight. At least, it will be harder if you focus on calorie counting. You need to transform the way your body uses calories. The best way to do this is by following a few simple tips.
